An essential travel health resource that no GP practice or travel clinic should be without...
On 23rd June the National Travel Health Network & Centre (NaTHNaC) published and launched the 2010 edition of an essential travel health resource that no GP practice or travel clinic should be without: Health Information for Overseas Travel, known as the UK Yellow Book.
The launch event, held at the Wellcome Collection in London, was an opportunity to thank many who have been involved with the book’s production, including InterHealth’s very own Dr. Vanessa Field (lead editor), and Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Evelyn Sharpe (contributor). It was an excellent opportunity to highlight the importance of the book and to people working in travel and health.

The Yellow Book is aimed primarily at health professionals. It has been produced as a clinical reference work to aid in the pre and post travel consultation. It provides a wealth of clinical information in a very user-friendly format. Although the content focuses on the practice of travel medicine in the UK, the book will also be of interest to health professionals in Europe and other English-speaking countries.
Organisations deploying staff and volunteers overseas could also benefit from having a reference copy to help them become aware of the potential risks of international travel.
The book has been endorsed by all UK health authorities and its influence is expected to extend beyond the UK. Commenting on the book, Mr. Justin McCracken, Chief Executive of the Health Protection Agency, said: “The Yellow book is an essential travel health resource that no GP practice or travel clinic should be without.”
Government statistics estimate that there were nearly 60 million trips by UK residents in 2009, compared to just over 30 million 20 years ago. Increasing numbers of vulnerable travellers, including older people, pregnant women, young children, and those with complex medical problems, are going to more adventurous or remote destinations.
The Yellow Book contains comprehensive information and advice for travel health professionals with specific sections on:
