Cholera in Haiti - update 1

The current outbreak of cholera which began in the Artibonite river valley in central Haiti is continuing to spread. The death toll has risen to 644, and about 170 people are now being treated in the capital Port-au-Prince. It is thought that just under 10,000 people are currently receiving hospital treatment for cholera throughout the country.

The Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) has warned that there is a real risk that the outbreak will spread across the border to the Dominican Republic.

Cases are thought to have increased following the heavy rains and flooding caused by Hurricane Tomás which blew across Haiti on Friday 5th November. These conditions have helped to spread the water-borne disease further.
