Book Review: The Traveller's Good Health Guide (third edition)
by Jane N. Zuckerman from the Academic Centre for Travel Medicine and Vaccines

This is the third edition of a traveller’s guide to health first published in 1999 under the title of ‘‘Healthy Beyond Heathrow’’ written by a physician with a wealth of experience in travel medicine, a subject in which there is very considerable and growing interest.

The emphasis throughout is on practical aspects of health for those travelling, living and working abroad. The book is comprehensive containing eminently sensible
advice such as ‘‘do not leave the book at home or at the back of your 4 x 4 (SUV e Sports Utility Vehicle).

This handy paperback book is very readable and well-balanced and is divided into four sections: Before you go; While abroad; When you return and Notes on important conditions (ranging from coughs and colds, tooth and mouth problems to anthrax and Ebola and other haemorrhagic fevers). There are 10 comprehensive Appendices covering many aspects of stress self-help, a checklist of useful medicines to notes on individual vaccines.

The third edition was written by Ted Lankester with a number of contributions by a number of his InterHealth team and other colleagues. It is aimed basically at the
lay traveller with the basic message ‘‘have your jabs, take your anti-malarials, set up rules for sensible eating and personal hygiene and lead a balanced lifestyle’’.

However, there is much more, and all trainees in Travel Medicine worldwide, professions allied to medicine, and the many physicians who practice preventive medicine, will also find the sensible and practical advice very valuable.

Why MyHealth?
  • Why MyHealth?

"As the Country Representative for Mali at Tearfund, I am often caught off guard when I need to travel at short notice.

Preparation can be a real hassle when you’re focussing on many different things. However, I know I can’t do my job well if I’m not healthy and resilient. When I’m ill on assignment it has a huge impact on my work.

MyHealth will make a real difference to those working internationally by providing expert reassurance if problems arise. This means we can get on with our work, trying to transform the lives of those most in need."
