Flooding in Colombia

21 December 2010

Information and health advice for those travelling to or working in Colombia

Colombia has been hit by the heaviest rains it’s seen for 30 years, which have destroyed over 200,000 homes.

Over 1.2 million people are affected by the flooding and 161 people have died. Central and Northern Colombia have suffered particularly badly, with many areas of land under water for weeks.

If you are travelling to or working in the areas affected please take note of the following health advice:

  •  There is a risk of leptospirosis in these flood-affected areas.
  • After floods and heavy rains the incidence of malaria, dengue fever and other insect-borne diseases can sometimes increase. Please seek further advice if you plan to travel in the coming weeks.
  • We recommend that you take a diarrhoea treatment kit with you if are involved in the aid effort in the flood-affected areas
