Dealing with leaving the frontline

“I knew I was OK despite the challenges of the mission. So many people had lost their homes and loved ones.’We talked about all the difficult things and then I found myself thinking about my young national colleague I’d trained and recently said goodbye to’. ‘I found tears coming to my eyes.’ ‘I had no idea I felt so attached to him.”

Sam is Irish, an experienced shelter specialist, familiar with working in natural disaster zones. He said he always appreciated his 2 year medical check-up (Medical MOT) at InterHealth but his most recent one had flagged up a few other issues related to his general well-being so he was advised to book in for a Confidential Review.

Sam was not ill or disturbed but he had been unaware of the bond which had formed between him and the young colleague he was mentoring. The Confidential Review gave him the opportunity to allow his thoughts and feelings to come to the surface in an unhurried setting.

Sam also said:

“I wasn’t embarrassed, just astonished. I had thought the Confidential Review was just in case I was traumatised but now I will want to come again as it was a really good experience to finish off my mission”.
