Team Dynamics and Conflict Management Team Dynamics and Conflict Management
In partnership with The Management Centre
Wednesday 23rd February 2011

For managers in relief and development, dealing with everyday relationships can often be every bit as demanding as humanitarian work itself. Left unaddressed, the often competing demands of headquarters, colleagues and staff members can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. All too often, this can have a draining impact on morale and productivity.

This thought-provoking and interactive workshop takes an in-depth look at the group dynamics that can unfold in humanitarian settings, how conflict arises, and how it can be used as a pathway to fresh and creative ways of working. Drawing on field scenarios, organisational theory and the latest practical management tools, the one-day training is aimed at equipping managers to recognise what is going on in their teams and to deal with problems early and effectively.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this day delegates will be able to:

  • Identify the range of intense emotions that arise in relief and development settings
  • Understand the impact that trying to cope with these emotions has on team dynamics and how that can lead to conflict
  • Assess the impact of past life experiences on current working relationships
  • Critically evaluate the five different approaches to dealing with conflict
  • Hold difficult conversations and offer constructive feedback based on non-violent communication principles
  • Use coaching principles for creative problem-solving.

Testimonial

“I recently attended the psychological first aid course and found it to be most useful. Alongside giving participants a better understanding the physiology of the brain and the different responses people might have to a traumatic incident, it generated good discussion and provided a number of helpful and practical ways of supporting volunteers in the event of a critical incident. Thank you.”
