Community Health Global Network (CHGN)

Who we are

Community Health Global Network (CHGN) was birthed in February 2005 as a separate, self-funded initiative of InterHealth Worldwide (Reg No 1103935). It is a global network of individuals, community health workers, academics, consultants, health service providers and church leaders who are passionate about mobilising effective primary health care in developing countries.

What we do

The Network aims to:

  • Link, strengthen, resource, empower and encourage Christian community health programmes working at the ‘frontline’ in resource poor areas.

  • Encourage programmes to form regional clusters so that by working together they can have greater impact, credibility, negotiating power and ability totackle collective healthchallenges.

  • Enable smaller community health programmes to link into the global health scene, and amplify their ‘voice’ and influence.

  • Develop the website, in order to provide easy access to a wide variety of valuable health resources suchas news and events, topics, training resources, partnerships, best practice guides and links to key models or programmes from which CHGN members can learn.

Why we do it

CHGN is founded on the values, model and the teachings of Jesus, who served the needs of the poor and marginalized, out of compassion and love. We believe in a holistic approach to health, that integrates Biblical values, compassionate care and the concept of Shalom.

It is all too evident that in many parts of the world, health care is not working for the poorest communities. A different model is needed, based on the empowerment of communities, so that they themselves can prevent illness and care for their own health in well-managed programmes. We affirm that even the poorest communities have a wealth of skills and experience to address their own health problems. By encouraging health programmes to respect and work WITH these communities, rather than simply implement their own agendas, true transformation can be achieved.

Time and again we see how, when communities are given opportunities they want and programmes they can own, they are empowered to achieve the lives they desire.

We see this with programmes where communities take charge of disease detection and drug distribution, with rapid and sustainable improvements in health” Dr Margaret Chan DG WHO.

Values

In fulfilling its mission, CHGN is committed to specific values which include:

  • An international and multi-cultural approach to learning.
  • The humanitarian principles of equity, justice and human rights, regardless of race, religion, and gender.
  • Working with the most needy and marginalized.
  • An integral, whole person approach to health (inc physical, mental, environmental, social, spiritual...)
  • A community empowerment model of health development.
  • Professionalism and mutual, evidence-based practice and accountability.
  • Cooperation with all who share our Christian or humanitarian values.
  • Commitment to seeking creative responses to the challenges set by the Millennium Development Goals and other global health priorities.
