Malaria Treatment

Treat suspected malaria fast!
If you suspect malaria, please see the best health worker you can as soon as possible and get a malaria blood test. To take precautions it’s worth taking a standby malaria treatment kit with you.

You should consider taking a standby treatment kit if you are going to malarious area for more than 2 weeks, unless going to an area with known good quality medical care and drug availability. These kits contain medicines to self treat suspected attacks of malaria, or provide appropriate drugs for use by the doctor you consult overseas.

Choice of kit depends on destination and which medicine you are taking for malaria prevention. Our InterHealth Travel health Nurses will let you know the most appropriate kit to order. To make sure the correct treatment is given and confirm that the illness is malaria, you must still see a doctor as soon as possible. Standby treatment drugs are not a replacement for malaria prevention tablets.

Never wait longer than 8 hours before seeing a doctor or starting treatment. Malaria often strikes when you arrive home or during travel. If you suspect malaria, arrange a malaria blood slide in your nearest hospital without delay.
