Global Resilience East Africa

In 2011 we supported over 1600 people travelling to East Africa.

Nairobi has become a recent focus for InterHealth and is where we established our first regional hub, making this a key region for delivering training. Currently we are delivering two of our popular workshops in Nairobi to those involved in NGO staff care.

"Working in the relief, development or mission sector shouldn’t by definition be bad for you, but we know how common it is for people to burn out. And often, it’s simply because they get too busy to stop and think about the impact the work is having on them. The Global Resilience programme aims to create that space to reflect on current challenges, consider alternative ways of doing things, and reconnect with the initial sense of purpose and energy that brought them to this work in the first place."

Effective Team Dynamics in NGOs Effective Team Dynamics in NGOs
26th September 2012
Understanding relationships in NGO teams & how to manage them

For managers in relief and development, dealing with everyday relationships can often be every bit as demanding as humanitarian work itself. Left unaddressed, the often competing demands of headquarters, colleagues and team members can lead to misunderstanding and challenges in team relations. All too often this can have a draining impact on morale and productivity.

This thought-provoking and interactive workshop takes an in-depth look at the group dynamics that can unfold in relief and development settings.

Drawing on field scenarios, organisational theory and cutting-edge listening and
facilitation skills, this one-day training is aimed at equipping NGO managers to recognise what is going on in their teams and to deal with problems early and effectively.

Who should attend?

Country directors, department heads, line managers and anyone who supervises staff in field locations.

What will you learn?

By the end of the day you will be able to:

  • Identify the range of intense emotions that arise in relief and development settings
  • Understand the impact that trying to cope with these emotions has on team dynamics and how that can lead to conflict
  • Assess the impact of past life experiences on current working relationships
  • Apply effective listening skills to support constructive team relations
  • Hold difficult conversations and offer constructive feedback
  • Effectively engage with cultural diversity in teams
