Staying Resilient out in the field

Elizabeth is Kenyan and she has been working as a midwife in a camp for Internationally Displaced persons’s (IDPs) in another part of Africa. The security situation was volatile and she was evacuated three times by her agency and she had returned three times to pick up the threads of her work alongside traditional birth attendants.

Elizabeth said she had been asked to renew her contract and she wanted to go back but she was aware that she was not as resilient as usual.

“I don’t sleep well and I seem to get irritable very easily. Sometimes I want to shout at people and I worry that I might behave unprofessionally.”

After reviewing her situation and exploring some developments to her stress management strategies she said:

“I hadn’t realised how much I missed having a secure place to live, a place I can rely on to go back to, even if it’s just a tent. When I return I shall be sure to keep closer touch with my family at home and, even if I am evacuated again, I shan’t miss my R&R. It’s not worth it!”
