Psychological First Aid Psychological First Aid
Supporting volunteers immediately after traumatic events
Wednesday 24th November 2010 9.30-16.30

Traumatic events can present daunting challenges to leaders of volunteers and expedition teams. In the midst of considerable distress, it can be difficult to identify responses that will be helpful to those involved.

This workshop offers simple, practical and effective strategies for supporting colleagues and team members in the immediate aftermath of critical incidents. Based on the latest research into risk and resilience, the one-day training also draws deeply on InterHealth’s extensive clinical experience of working with traumatic stress.

Who is this for?

This workshop is aimed at team leaders from GAP, volunteer and expedition agencies who have direct responsibility for those in the field. This workshop is not primarily for HR professionals.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this day delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the basic objectives of Psychological First Aid, and its limitations.
  • Understand the impact of traumatic stress on both body and mind.
  • Recognise the broad range of normal early reactions that people can experience in the immediate aftermath of traumatic events.
  • Explore one’s own responses to distress and understand the role that awareness and active self-care plays in one’s capacity to help others.
  • Offer practical and emotional assistance that complements and bolsters the coping skills of colleagues or team members.
  • Understand major risk factors for psychological distress and recognise when to refer people for further support.
  • Explore organisational protocols that may need to be implemented to promote Psychological First Aid.
