What does SPF (Sun Protection Factor) mean?
A product's SPF is a measure of its ability to filter out dangerous UVB rays. Experts recommend using a sunscreen with a factor of 15+, which offers at least 90% protection from harmful UVB rays. The higher the factor, the more protection you get from burning. However, no sunscreen can offer 100% protection, so don't expose your skin when it can be avoided. Remember that children's skin is more susceptible to sun damage, so needs to be protected with a higher SPF sun screen and more importantly children should wear a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses. Also, if you're taking doxycycline for malaria prevention or treatment you may be more likely to burn so it is important to use a high factor sunscreen.
When to apply
Try to apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out into the sun and before using insect repellents.
