Fit notes replaced the old 'Sick certificates' on April 2010. It has long been recognised that long periods out of work are associated with poor physical and mental health, as well as recognising that in most cases, an individual does not need to be 100% fit to return to work.

The new system of certification aims to facilitate an earlier return to work.
