Dr Ted Lankester, MA MB BChir MRCGP FFTM RCPSGlasg Ct Th Ted Lankester is a founding member of InterHealth from its first registration as a charity in 1989. Although originally a GP, Ted spent most of the 1980s in the Himalayas where he was involved in setting up a variety of health programmes both in mountain villages and refugee camps. Ted now also co-leads the Community Health Global Network, a new project under InterHealth (see website). He is the author of The Travellers Good Health Guide (Sheldon Press 2006), Setting up Community Health Programmes (Macmillan 3rd Ed at press) and a co-author of Urban Health and Development (Macmillan 2001). He has also written Travel Health in Your Pocket (2005) for short-term travellers. He is involved in writing and and lecturing on global health issues and travel medicine. Ted served as a Tearfund trustee and board member for 9 years, and as Assistant Editor of Tropical Doctor. He is now a council member of Global Connections and a Board Member and Trustee of People in Aid as well as being on the Advisory board of Nathnac, the government body responsible for regulating the healthcare of tourists and travellers. Ted's interests include travel, his local church, squash, cross-country running, ornithology and high altitude botany. We are delighted to announce that Ted is a fellow of the newly formed Faculty of Travel Medicine under the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow).
Dr Clare Redstone, MB, ChB, MRCGP, BSc Clare has worked as a GP in the East End of London since 1989 and started work at InterHealth in April 2004. She sees her role at InterHealth as enabling her to support and encourage people in their work overseas. She aims to help people be well for travel overseas, stay well while away and, if need be get well again on their return ready for the next challenge. Clare sees health as being more than physical so relishes the opportunity to spend longer with each client than she can in General Practice: a step nearer to practicing "whole person health care." She has begun a Foundation course in Travel Medicine and hopes to be able to continue to teach medical students from Barts and the London Medical School. She also intends to be working as a GP locum for the time being.
Dr Vanessa Field, MBBS MRCGP DipTrav Med CTM Vanessa trained at the Vanessa is also part time Travel Medicine consultant at the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NATHNaC).
Dr Claire Davies, MBBS, MRCP, MRCGP, DTM&H, B Med Sci Claire graduated in 1996 from St Bartholomew's medical college. Her overseas experience began in 1997 as a medical officer with Operation Raleigh in Uganda. She undertook the Diploma in Tropical Medicine at the London School of Tropical Medicine in 2000. This lead her to India as part of the STOP Polio project, followed by a year in chronic disease management in Ethiopia. For the last 3 years she has been working as a GP in East London. In her spare time Claire is learning French and trying to revive her garden. She still travels when she has the chance and in 2006 she crossed the Sahara in a car bought for less than £100.
Dr Ian Campbell, MBBS, MRCP (UK), DRCOG Ian started with InterHealth as a travel health clinician in February 2008. He coordinated support to the health programmes of The Salvation Army worldwide from 1990 until late in 2007-and prior to that was the medical officer in charge of a large mission hospital in Zambia. His links with HIV experience began there and have grown. Ian is a keen photographer ,a daily ‘jogger’ ,and is married to Alison ,who works with Ian on initiatives in the UK on HIV and immigrant communities . Together they coordinat ‘Affirm Facilitation Associates , which offers support to faith linked responses to HIV.
Dr Susan Beattie Travel Health Clinician Susan is from Australia and is currently living in London and has previously been involved with general practice, travel medicine and medical screening. We’re delighted that with all her knowledge and experience she can join the InterHealth team. Susan is a keen traveller and did her medical elective in Nepal.
Diane Parsons, RGN, HN, HV, RNT, BA, Dip Adult Counselling, Cert Education Travel Clinic Nurse Manager Diane has worked at InterHealth since 1999, coming from a career in nursing which began with an integrated RGN: Health Visitor and District Nursing training and led her into working in the community, returning to hospital and clinical teaching, moving into nurse education both in adult general and specialist paediatrics at Great Ormond Street. She completed a course in Adult Psychodynamic Counselling and was involved in counselling with a local affiliate of WPF and later took on a supervisory role in addition to teaching at Birkbeck and setting up a counselling service in a GP practice. Her involvement with overseas work had always been as part of the support network in her local church. Annie Sewell MSc, SRN, SCM, Accident & Emergency speciality, trained at Annie first worked in the humanitarian aid field in 1982 for the British Red Cross/ ICRC on Thai-Cambodian border as war-surgical nurse, and has been head nurse and deputy at Red Cross Hospitals in Annie has therefore worked for many different NGOs and finds all the travel contributes to helping our clients - she can picture them in most places and knows the conditions of work! She has also done some more unusual jobs - as a nursing sister for Cunard on QE2 and sister ships, and for the European Youth Orchestra (ECYO) and Operation Raleigh in Bolivia/Peru and
Fiona Thomas - RGN, OHND Fiona Thomas has been a nurse for twenty years, she worked initially within a hospital environment and then in 1990 moved into an Occupational Health setting, working as a nurse employed by St Thomas Hospital working on a contract for the foreign office. This involved setting up and running a travel clinic in London and delivering advice on staying healthy overseas. During her time with the foreign office Fiona spent time overseas relieving Nurses based at some locations with limited/poor medical facilities. She gained an Occupational Health Diploma in 1992. Since having children Fiona had been working in General practice which incorporated a significant amount of travel health and now her children are older she is pleased to be working once again solely within the field of travel health. Fiona’s interests include, making stained glass windows, working with the 5 to 7 year olds at her local church, travel, reading and cooking for friends. back to travel clinic back to top
Annie Hargrave - UKCP Registered Psychotherapist and MBACP Senior Accredited Counsellor/ Psychotherapist Coordinator, InterHealth Psychological Health Services Team Annie spent ten years in She is trained as a specialist in trauma psychology and psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic. As well as working with people after serious incidents she offers both therapeutic and professional support to people working with traumatised populations and disturbing material such as human rights monitors and journalists. Annie also has a special focus on work-life balance and stress management in the international aid and mission sectors, particularly with people who are frequent travellers. She works with a small number of people in personal therapy and occasionally takes on consultancies overseas. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

Dr Evelyn Sharpe, MB BCh MRCPsych, MFTM RCPSGlasg Evelyn is a Consultant Psychiatrist and carries out psychological assessment of candidates applying to various aid, development and mission agencies. She is also available for consultation about mental health problems with individuals or organisations. She combines her work at InterHealth with a post as an NHS consultant in London. Evelyn has been at InterHealth since 1991 and has visited countries in Asia, Africa and Europe in connection with her work here. Like the other members of the Psychological Health Services team she also does confidential reviews and crisis debriefing. Evelyn also has some theological training and is interested in the interaction of spiritual and psychological factors. John Steley, BA, MPhil, GDipAppPsych John was educated in At InterHealth John provides Psychological Profiles, counselling and other psychological services. At present he is researching child protection awareness in cross-cultural situations. Dr Debbie Hawker PhD, D Clin Psy Debbie Hawker (sometimes known as Debbie Lovell-Hawker) has joined InterHealth’s Psychological Health Services team working from her base in the East Midlands. She brings a wealth of experience in working with the aid and development sector as well as trauma management and debriefing expertise. Debbie was until recently the principal clinical psychologist at Oxford University Department of Psychiatry where she specialized in therapy and research into eating disorders. She combined this with increasing involvement with the aid & development sector and Christian mission partners working with international NGOs and church based organisations. She has been particularly active in research and training as well as offering her services in debriefing, providing therapy where needed, supervision and on field support. She is an enthusiastic participant in the international Member Care Network. Debbie frequently travels overseas to work with both local and expatriate staff. Debbie's published work includes the People in Aid Publications 'Working through trauma: Supporting staff responding to disasters' and 'Debriefing aid workers: A comprehensive manual'.
Angus trained as counsellor after several years working in the international NGO sector. He has extensive experience working in conflict affected countries - at a field, programme and policy level. He also holds a Masters in violence and conflict, specialising in psychosocial interventions within complex emergencies. Before joining InterHealth, Angus worked in a variety of counselling settings. This includes a general counselling service and a specialist service providing support to adults who are experiencing drug or alcohol-related problems. He has a BA (hons) in Person Centred Counselling and he works from a humanistic perspective. He is a BACP (British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists) Registered Practitioner. Annelise Eady, BSc(Hons) OHND RGN Annelise has been working in Occupational Health for over 10 years and has experience working with organisations of different types and sizes from construction to call centres. The philosophy she brings to InterHealth is teamwork and the provision of flexible, tailored solutions designed to meet client's occupational health requirements.
Dr Robert Willcox, FFOM, DTM&H Dr Willcox has wide Occupational Health experience having worked with British Airways, British Petroleum (in the Middle East), the BBC (where he was involved in the design of the world's most successful stress measurement tools) and as Group Medical Officer for Cable and Wireless. He is qualified in Tropical Disease and has extensive interests in illness related to international travel, commuting, work hours and sleep and the impact of migraine in the workplace. He has significant experience in improving managing pressure in the modern workplace. Robert is also the Managing Director of One-Click Health, an innovative internet tool for managing short-term sickness absence.
Sebastian Behrens Sebastian joined Interhealth in March 2007 as the new Occupational Health Coordinator. Sebastian studied Social Anthropology and Development Studies at SOAS - University of London. He has a long-standing interest in international development and public issues having volunteered and worked in different health, care and charity settings in New Zealand, India and the UK. In his free time Sebastian enjoys reading, cooking (and of course eating) as well as going on long walks around London. Jane Downey Occupational Health Coordinator Jane Downey is the Senior Occupational Health Adviser at Interhealth. After gaining extensive experience in nursing and midwifery Jane decided she was ready for a different type of challenge and found it in Occupational Health. Jane has been in OH since 1991 and has worked in all types of commercial environments ranging from the Corporate to the Public Sector and Industrial. Jane draws on this wide ranging experience to assist Human Resources and Managers manage their Company’s health issues.
Annette Chorley Annette is an Occupational Health Adviser with a vast amount of knowledge and experience in OH and until 2002 was a Senior lecturer OH Nursing at the South Bank University. Annette will be supporting the team with mainly general OH clinical duties. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

Carla Monteiro Carla joined InterHealth's travel supplies centre team in March 2006, where she works alongside Margaret Lancaster to manage our stock of mozzie nets, anti-malarials and the rest. Charlotte McIver Charlotte is a qualified pharmacist with experience in community pharmacy running a branch of Lloyds, in a hospital setting and also as a self-employed locum pharmacist. Charlotte and her husband have just returned from 9 months travelling internationally. Andrew Holt Andrew is responsible for the finance and administrative function at InterHealth. Coming from a legal background, Andrew spent 5 years on secondment from Tear Fund managing Kagando Rural Development Centre in western Uganda from 1992 to 1997. His subsequent roles have been as Director of Administration at a large church in Bracknell, and as finance manager for the charity, for dementia. Andrew has been involved in several more recent initiatives in Uganda, and also maintains a regular link with Kagando. Julie joined InterHealth in September 2006 and is responsible for managing Reception Services. She gained her Customer Service and Administration experience during the many years she spent working in the banking sector. In May 2004 she took a much needed career break to pursue her love for travel and visited Thailand, Malaysia, Bali, Lombok, Singapore, Dubai, Brazil and Argentina. After returning from South America she took a complete career change and worked as a receptionist in a busy GP surgery. It was here she discovered her interest in healthcare and in particular assisting those who needed travel advice. When Julie is not following her passion for travel she can be found working out at the gym, socialising with friends or pottering around her garden.

IT Coordinator
Ellie is responsible for coordinating CrossCare software and IT at Interhealth. She has a BA in Mathematics and a MPhil in Quantitative Modelling, both at Cambridge University. Having previously worked as a transport planner she joined Interhealth in June 2006.
In her spare time she is involved in the leadership team of Porthpean Ventures camps, running a cell group at Greyfriars church in Reading, horse riding and walking around the Berkshire countryside.

Debbie Ralph Debbie joined InterHealth as Medical Secretary in June 2006. She trained originally within the Civil Service working in When Debbie returned to work she gained her medical experience working in various NHS areas, covering a wide range of disciplines. She has a great interest in Psychiatry, where she worked for a few years covering various roles and she also acted as therapy secretary for the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome team based at Oldchurch Hospital in Romford. When Debbie is not spending time with her family she enjoys reading, trips to the theatre and catching up with her friends.
Lucy Varghese Lucy has been working in the NHS for almost 10 years as an AMSPAR qualified Medical Secretary in a variety of health settings including GP Practices and Health Centres; a Community Drug and Alcohol Team and the local general hospital in her hometown in She decided to take a career break in between employment in 2001 to return to higher education to complete a BA (Hons) in Human Resources Management at Since graduating in 2004, Lucy has experienced a wide variety of interesting short & long term postings in the health, public and charity sectors, including Little Haven Children’s Hospice, South Essex Emergency Doctors Service and Essex County Council. She enjoys reading, socialising and traveling.
Reception Services Assistant Born in South Africa, Wilene started her career in public health services working at a private GP practice. She then went on to do a service year for Christ, where we she took part dance and drama at schools to help spread the Gospel. Wilene moved to the UK, London in 2003 after meeting her husband in 2002. Support Services Assistant Dilnoza studied Finances in Russian Federation, and had big experience in accounts and administration in the UK. She is currently on her way to obtain her ACCA qualification. Having big respect to all kind of charity organizations through whole her life joining InterHealth was big chalange to her. In her spare time, Yixi enjoys listening to music, traveling, playing sports and reading books. back to Reception Services back to top Sarah Underwood IT and Administration Support Sarah started at InterHealth in September 2008 in the role of IT and Admin Support. She graduated from Bath University in June 2008 with a Masters in Mathematics. After this she spent a month travelling around South Africa before joining InterHealth, during which time she was able to spend time volunteering in townships in the Cape Town area as well as going skydiving whilst travelling along the Garden Route. Sarah plays various musical instruments and was part of the Student Musicals Society during university. The business achieved several milestones including stocking Waterstone’s bookshops and over 45 Universities, and gaining central page coverage in The Times. Prior to joining InterHealth, Becky spent two and a half years as the Entrepreneurship Manager in the University of Reading Business School, growing cross-disciplinary enterprise education and working closely with the corporate, SME and non-profit sectors. Becky has had a strong health theme to her studies undertaking research for the Institute of Healthcare Management as part of a BA Accounting and Management and more recently, researching issues surrounding healthcare contracting in poverty alleviation and development as part of a Master’s in Applied Development Studies. Becky is passionate about reducing poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa, being Project Founder and Manager for ‘Kupasa Banja’, a new funding initiative founded in partnership with international NGO, HOPE worldwide which provides support to over 200 HIV/AIDS affected children in the slums of Lusaka, Zambia.

Nina Flowers Nina joined InterHealth in May 2007 to project manage Interhealth's new Travel Health Advice Centre, which is now available as part of the travelwellplan. Current key projects include the development of InterHealth's public website and online shop. Nina's academic background is in Art and Design, and since gaining a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Design Management and Innovation has worked at the Arts Council, at a well known Cambridgeshire radio station and at Extending her design skills into the digital world, Nina's role as Digital Communications Coordinator at Papworth Hospital included the implementation of a new intranet, the development of the hospitals public facing website and the production of three specialist films about Pulmonary Hypertension and Immunology. Outside of work, Nina's main interests include sustainable design, the arts, dance and travel. |

Cathy Travis, FRGS, Cert Mgmt Voluntary Organisations, Foundation Course in Travel Medicine Cathy has carried out a variety of roles since she joined InterHealth in 1997. Her current role is to manage and develop the content of InterHealth’s online Travel Health Advice Centre. She was born in Argentina, brought up in Peru and came to the UK for further education. Cathy studied for a geography degree specialising in development and environmental issues and, following graduation, spent seven years running a short-term volunteer programme to Latin America. The links between geography and health are a major interest area for her. Away from work Cathy is a keen photographer and traveller, enjoys current affairs, sport, cooking and hillwalking with her young family. back to Business Development back to top

Christine Ryan For several years she has volunteered as an English teacher to many immigrant groups and further became involved with charities through her research in back to Business Development back to top Zannah Jeffreys Zannah has worked part-time as the Operations Manager for the Community Health Global Network (CHGN) since June 2007. This is a separate initiative of InterHealth, founded by Drs Ted Lankester and Nick Henwood in 2005. CHGN aims to encourage, empower, connect and resource community health programmes around the world (http://www.www.chgn.org). Zannah graduated from Edinburgh University in 1999 with a Joint Masters in French and History of Art. After spending 2 years studying theology and practical discipleship in Sheffield, she moved to London to work for the Advocacy Director at Tearfund. In 2004, she spent 6 months in India, where she gained a diploma in Community Health and Development from CRHP, Jamkhed. She also visited a number of Tearfund partners around the country and worked on community health projects in the slums and brothels of Mumbai for Oasis India. Following the tsunami in December 2004, she worked for Tearfund's Disaster Management Team in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, setting up the programme office and recruiting project staff. In 2006, she moved to Meulaboh (a smaller town in the province of Aceh) to be the Resources Development Officer for Tearfund's Community Health Education Programme. In 2007, Zannah relished another Tearfund opportunity to carry out a two month Admin and HR training assignment in the DRC, before resettling in the UK. Zannah enjoys the arts, cycling, tennis, exploring new places and spending quality time with friends and family...
InterHealth is very pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Belcher as our new Chief Executive. Kevin comes with a wealth of senior management experience in both the private and voluntary sector, most recently leading Pecan, a faith based charity working with long term- unemployed people in South London. Kevin is married to a GP, is the father of eight children and lives in Hackney. He has a long- term interest in the developing world, and his parents were missionaries to Nepal. |
