Seeing a Psychiatrist

The Psychological Health Services team at InterHealth is currently made up of a psychotherapist, a psychologist and a psychiatrist. Although our training and approaches differ there is considerable overlap, so many of the available appointments can be provided by any member of the team.

In some circumstances, however, a referral to a specified member of the team is appropriate.

What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a doctor who specialised in psychiatry after completion of general medical training. In the UK psychiatrists are usually members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) and will have received training in biological, psychological and social aspects of psychiatric disturbance and mental illness. As a doctor he/she can prescribe and monitor drug treatments but may also engage in psychological treatments.

When should someone see a psychiatrist?

  • If it is likely that drug treatment, such as anti-depressants, might be indicated, or other medication issues are relevant.
  • If physical health problems are contributing to or complicating the concerns over mental health and well-being.
  • If there is a past history or family history of psychiatric disturbance or mental illness.
  • If there is a possibility of significant mental illness needing diagnosis and treatment.

What does a psychiatric assessment involve?

It lasts up to 90 minutes, including time for discussion and looking to the way ahead. To gain a full understanding the psychiatrist will ask the client about current problems and life history and family background.

If a report is required the contents will be discussed and permission sought for disclosure. The usual principles of confidentiality apply.

We hope you will find the appointment with the psychiatrist helpful and you will benefit from the time, experience and expertise he/she is able to offer at InterHealth.
