Be prepared before your visit - what to bring with you and what to expect.
Why do I need to complete a personal health form before having a medical?
This is very useful because it allows doctors to know what problems you have had in the past and are now concerned about. When you have the medical you can discuss these together. It also helps both patient and doctor to be systematic so things are less likely to be missed.
How much is all this going to cost me or our organisation?
Please see the website for a price list, but we don’t always know what the total will come to because everyone’s requirements are different and we don’t know what you will need. The nurse will discuss prices with you before vaccinating you. Prices for medicals and our range of services are listed, but in addition to a medical you may need additional tests, which cannot be accounted for before one of our doctors meets with you. We are a medical charity so we try and keep our prices as low as we can.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Yes. Please bring the following.
Do I need to fast?
No, only if you have been asked to because you need a fasting blood sugar or lipid profile test. Otherwise just eat normally.
How long will my appointment take?
This varies a lot. If you are just having a medical about 45 to 60 minutes. If you are also seeing a nurse an additional 15 to 30 minutes. If you are having an appointment with the PHS team, another 60 to 90 minutes. Sometimes you will have to wait between appointments if we are very busy.
I hate having medicals. Will people explain what I need to do and can I opt out of any examination if I don’t want to have it?
We are very aware of the natural fears and sensitivities that many people have. We will try and explain at each step of the way and if we don’t please ask. If there is an examination you really don’t want to have, please tell the doctor or nurse and we will try and spare you unless it‘s really essential.
